Create a Spa-inspired Bathroom Design in 7 Steps

Transform Your Bathroom into a Tranquil Retreat

There’s no better feeling than coming home to relax after a busy day, especially if your relaxation routine includes a trip to your new spa-inspired bathroom.

Wondering how to achieve that Pinterest-worthy design you saw on your feed? The key is knowing what you need to add or remove in order to create a calming atmosphere.

As a realtor with a love for wellness-focused interior design, I’ll gladly show you how to transform your bathroom into an oasis. Keep reading for all of the steps!

1. Plan Your Layout & Research

Before starting on any home improvement project, it's beneficial to have a well-thought-out plan. You’ll want to assess your current bathroom layout and determine if any changes are needed.

Consider factors such as available space, plumbing connections, and functionality. If possible, aim for an open and spacious design to maximize the sense of serenity.

If you’re in need of some inspiration, why not take a trip to the spa beforehand? Is this just an excuse to go to the spa… Maybe, but consider it research!

Think about the key features that you want to recreate in your own home. Do you feel most relaxed when surrounded by organic elements, such as eucalyptus and natural light? Or do you prefer a more modern look, with high-tech appliances? Take note of any and all features that add up to your dream bathroom.

Greenwich, CT, has plenty of options for a little R&R inspiration. Here are some of my recommendations:

Once you’re in a relaxed headspace, you’ll be able to create the perfect at-home spa experience.

2. Select a Calming Color Palette

One of the fundamental aspects of a spa-inspired bathroom is the color scheme. Opt for soothing and neutral tones that evoke a sense of calmness.

Shades like soft blues, gentle greens, warm grays, and earthy neutrals work exceptionally well. These colors create a serene backdrop that mimics the tranquility of a luxury spa, and you can get the perfect shade for your walls from Sherwin Williams:

Of course, feel free to choose any shades that offer relaxation to you. If you’d prefer to have bright colors or dark tones, go for it! Even the most eccentric shades can create a luxurious, spa-like feel when paired with the right furnishings.

3. Choose Luxurious Flooring and Wall Treatments

When it comes to flooring, choose materials that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for a bathroom environment.

Natural stone, such as marble or travertine, provides an elegant and timeless look. Alternatively, porcelain or ceramic tiles that resemble stone can be more cost-effective while still offering a similar aesthetic.

For wall treatments, using textured materials like beadboard or wainscoting add a touch of sophistication.

For a more bold look, consider installing wallpaper! As a wallpaper enthusiast, I would recommend choosing a subtle pattern or a nature-inspired motif to enhance the ambiance, without overpowering the room.

My favorite places to shop for long-lasting, gorgeous wallpaper are Sandberg Wallpaper and Schumacher.

4. Add in Serene Lighting

Proper lighting plays a crucial role in creating a serene atmosphere – adding a balance of natural and artificial light sources are key to relaxation at any time of the day.

Maximize the amount of natural light by utilizing sheer curtains or blinds that allow for privacy while still permitting sunlight to filter through. And incorporate dimmable light fixtures to create a soft, warm glow once the sun sets.

For a more modern look, add LED strips under vanity cabinets or mirrors. These LED bath bars from Sonneman come in 3 different options – aluminum, black, and white.

I’d advise hiring a professional to install any new lighting fixtures. Reach out for my list of recommended, licensed electricians in the Greenwich, CT area.

5. Embrace Natural Elements

Nature has a positive impact on our well-being, and integrating natural elements into your bathroom can be beneficial for both your mental and physical health.

Add indoor plants to introduce a breath of fresh air and a touch of greenery. Here are four plants to add into your bathroom for maximum benefits

  • Snake plant

  • Boston fern

  • Peace lily

  • Eucalyptus

Snake plant, Boston fern, and peace lily are the perfect options for ridding the air of pollutants and thriving in high humidity environments. Hanging eucalyptus in your shower helps release the plant’s healing properties, which can help reduce anxiety and ease congestion.

As for natural materials, look for high quality wood that’s impermeable to moisture. Teak, cedar, and hinoki are your best bet for durable and gorgeous options.

6. Optimize Your Storage Options

An essential aspect of a spa-inspired bathroom is its ability to evoke a sense of relaxation through minimalism. Trust me, I know how easy it is for your bathroom to get cluttered with everyday products, especially if you share the space with others.

But, there’s a simple fix: Storage, storage, storage. By incorporating various storage options in your space, you’ll not only clear cluttered surfaces but you’ll also organize your products in a way that makes sense.

Sleek, built-in cabinets, floating shelves, or hidden storage solutions are all great choices to keep your bathroom as stress-free as possible. Depending on the amount of products you have to store, it may be wise to add in multiple forms of storage.

Look for containers with a clean and simple design, and aim for more sophisticated materials such as glass, rattan, wood, or stone.

7. Indulge in Spa-Like Fixtures & Accessories

Here is where the fun really begins! In order to transform your bathroom into an at-home spa, you need to invest in high-quality fixtures and accessories.

Here are just a few options that will enhance the luxurious feel of your bathroom:

  • Install a freestanding bathtub as the focal point of your space.

  • Incorporate a rainfall shower head or multiple shower heads for a soothing, cascading effect.

  • Add a light dimmer to adjust your lighting as needed.

To fully immerse yourself in a spa-like ambiance, carefully select accessories that are intentional and enhance relaxation. What I mean by intentional is that even your smaller additions should serve a purpose – after all, you’ve just decluttered your space! Let’s keep it simple yet luxurious.

Plush, fluffy towels in neutral tones, bathrobes, scented candles, high-end products, and bath salts can elevate your bathing experience.

By implementing these 7 design concepts, you can create a spa-inspired bathroom that offers a luxurious retreat within your own home. Remember, the key is to focus on creating a serene ambiance through the careful selection of colors, fixtures, lighting, and natural elements.
